About Unity

When we began twelve years ago, we only dreamed about the potential of a community foundation that would serve the county. That potential isstarting to build. Since 1992, we’ve grown to over $15 million. Because it’s permanent, those funds will be given to the community over and over again. The miracle of endowment. For good, forever.

In the past 12 years, we’ve made possible over $4 million in direct grants and scholarships and more significantly, indirect grants worth $5 million. That means that $9 million has come into LaPorte County that wouldn’t have, if not for the Unity Foundation. How did that happen? Because of people who cared today and took actions to create a better tomorrow. It helps that our government provides tax incentives for families to be generous too!

We produce this Report to the Community to show what we do, who we help, and where the money goes. We enjoy highlighting real people, non-profits and community efforts. While it’s full of helpful information, grant detail and interesting stories, there’s still so much more we do.

We invite you to look to the Unity Foundation as a convenient and simple
resource for you to care today, and create a better tomorrow.

Welcome New Board Members

Robert Johnson
Robert joined Unity because he wants everyone to learn more about charitable giving. “I have always strived to be a good steward of the time, talents and treasures the good Lord has blessed me with,” Robert said. “It is truly an honor and privilege to be part of an organization that cares deeply about all its community and neighbors.” Robert is Practice Administrator at Hematology Oncology Associates, where his wife, Dr. Devena Alston, practices. He has been there since 1994, and defines his current role as helping create greater access to cancer care in the communities they serve (offices are in LaPorte, Michigan City and Gary). They have two children, and have lived in LaPorte for thirteen years.

Michael Salmon
Mike tried retirement and didn't like it. After spending the majority of his career practicing as a CPA in Northwest Indiana, he now serves as the CFO for a company in Chicago. Mike firmly believes in the power of community involvement, and has served on many boards. He joined Unity because he finds it especially rewarding to aid community organizations. He said, “Unity does a marvelous job supporting worthwhile causes in LaPorte County.”
Mike and June will be celebrating their 38th wedding anniversary this May. They have four children and three grandchildren.
