Local Connection to Haiti:  Two families in LaPorte started the Haiti Children's Education Fund just last month.  I learned that they and their friends have been volunteering in Haiti for 20+ years.  They first started going there to save children’s lives.  The more time they spent there, the more they realized the need to educate those children if Haiti will ever have a brighter future.  Then disaster struck.

It's Been a Gala 15 Years

The Unity Foundation celebrated 15 years in the rearview mirror not just by looking back, but by using the occasion to build for the future.

Unity concluded its year-long 15th anniversary celebration with a gala and an innovative fund-raiser that raised nearly $125,000 to forever benefit the people of LaPorte County.

The highlight of the sold-out event at Heston Hills Conference Center was "Pledge-a-Palooza," in which the guests competed to support their favorite non-profit organizations by making on-the-spot pledges. "Pup-a-Palooza" and his owner, played by Leigh and Marcia Morris, did their best to stir up pledges throughout the evening.

Not only did the non-profits benefit from the pledges, but the five organizations that collected the highest amounts received additional cash prizes from Unity to help their operations. They were Junior Achievement of Michigan City ($5,000); the LaPorte Family YMCA Child Care Center ($4,000); The Salvation Army of Michigan City ($3,000); the Boys & Girls Club of Michigan City ($2,000); and Dunebrook ($1,000). Honorable Mention: Women's Care Center ($1,000.)

Before the evening was over, Unity announced a $15,000 special anniversary grant opportunity. Organizations will be encouraged collaborate and 'unify' LaPorte County.

Our thanks go to event sponsors NIPSCO, Harbour Trust, Horizon Bank, National City and Wells Fargo.

Opportunity Ahead -

You don't have to wait another 15 years to support a favorite non-profit organization. Today's donation to Unity, or a planned gift created today, is the future.
